Alameda High Interact’s E-Waste Drive

Posted by Carrie

Hi everyone!

Tomorrow (2/12/12) is Alameda High Interact’s E-Waste! We’ve spread this around the schools and Rotarians, and we’re hoping to see great attendance. If you have any unused electronics that you really don’t need, bring it in!

Winter joys!

Posted by Carrie

I hope everyone had a holly jolly holiday! Here are some winter holiday service events that our batrays held:

On December 18th, our very own Alameda High made holiday cards for Macy’s Make-A-Wish foundation. They later went caroling for cans around Alameda’s Bayfarm Island! The event was very successful as they sang through the night.

In addition, St. Josephs, Oakland Tech and ASTI all came out that very Sunday to also make cards for Macy’s Make-A-Wish foundation at the Oakland Main Library! We continued working while we had our area meeting later that day.

During the winter break, Oakland Tech’s Interact club has also been volunteering numerous days for Satellite Housing, an organization throws Christmas feasts for seniors all over Oakland and Berkeley every year at the end of the year.

WHEEEE!

Clothing drive for Ugandan children

Posted by Carrie

Hey everyone!
It’s been AWFULLY CHILLY LATELY, hasn’t it?

Well, check this out! Oakland Technical high school is going to be doing a clothing drive for a group of orphans in Uganda! They will be collecting clothes for a group named Children of Uganda. About 20 orphaned Ugandan teenagers will be coming to the Bay Area at the beginning of January as part of a dance troop to raise awareness and money about their current situations and poverty in Uganda. They will be taking school donations until the end of January. The Area 1 schools will all be pitching in efforts to donate clothes to this cause!

Here are the Ugandan children that will be coming:
10 boys, 10 girls, ages 10 and up (mainly teenagers)

The most-needed items again are:
Jeans
Exercise pants
Tanks/undershirts
Belts
PJs
Long skirts for girls
Shoes (sneakers or good walking shoes) are second priority and harder to organize, but if you can donate those then that’s great. Remember that most of these kids are rather small, in terms of weight. we should have a variety of clothes but think on small size.

If you want more information, feel free to email area1@interact5170.org to get in contact with the Oakland Technical High School’s Interact Club!

Here are just some quick and fun videos of the children that will be coming: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8gy–hhqrw & http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGQqi3LSYVc

I hope to see lots of people help their cause! Other than that, stay warm everyone! :) !!!

Love,
Mama Bat ray Carrie

A Brief Update of Area 1

Posted by Carrie

As the year comes to a close, Area 1 has been busy doing community service and fundraising money for our international project, Free The Youth!
Here’s a brief sneak peek at what our Bodacious Batrays have been doing:

On December 18th, Area 1′s very own Oakland Technical High School and Alameda Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) Interact clubs went out to help the Alameda Red Cross Youth at the Alameda Southshore Town Centre by helping them gift wrap presents and raise money for scholarships. The event was a success as our very own Oakland and Alameda Interactors came out to some inter-city bonding!

As an annual tradition, ASTI also did free gift wrapping individually at the Alameda Southshore Town Centre, but also accepted for donations to Free The Youth. On Dec. 22nd & Dec. 24th, they raised over $350 in only two day’s worth of work! The event was a success–thanks to all the Interactors that came out to help!

Alameda High and Skyline High School has also been diligently working each weekend to volunteer at Uhuru, which is an organization in Oakland that makes and sells pies to raise funds for the African People’s Education and Defense Fund.

Keep it up, Area 1 Bodacious Batrays! :) ) !

Macy’s Make-A-Wish & Gift Wrapping

Posted by Carrie

Hi everybody!
For those who are finished with finals, congratulations! I hope everyone has a good break and stay warm during the holiday seasons! Brrr!

Speaking of holidays, Area 1 will be meeting at the Oakland Main Library on Sunday, Dec. 18th at 1PM to make holiday cards for Macy’s Make-A-Wish foundation! It will be a cute little bonding for our Interactors from Oakland and Alameda to come together and participate in a good cause.

In addition, prior to that event, Area 1 will also be gift wrapping at the Alameda Southshore Town Centre in collaboration with the Red Cross Youth to raise money for scholarships from 11AM-1PM!

Come and help out! :)

Peace, love, INTERACT~
