AHS Indie Rock Concert – “End of the Bay!”

Posted by Carrie

Tomorrow, April 13th, Alameda High Interact is hosting a benefit concert to support our International Project, Free the Youth.

Ticket Sales will go towards two organizations, Mary’s Meals and Firelight Foundation. You may not know the difference you are making, but somewhere around the world, a life is being given a better future.

They will be holding their concert with two local bands, Finish Ticket and Eager Eyes! Finish Tickets were recent graduates of Alameda High, and Eager Eyes are also local. With their recent East Bay Indie Rocket Concert, Eager Eyes is coming off a “hubabaloo” of processsions while Finish Ticket has recently been recording their latest album in LA and playing shows throughout CA.

Brief Biographies:

Finish Ticket: Finish Ticket, our hometown favorite, offers a sound that is broad and touches on everything in between the indie and pop realms, playing with the lines between underground and radio-friendly. Regarded for their live show, FT has played w/The Black Keys, Phoenix, SmashingPumpkins, Broken Bells, Young the Giant, and more. https://www.facebook.com/finishticket

EAGER EYES: Eager Eyes is an up-and-coming Alameda troupe with a knack for energetic, electronic-tinged indie rock. Their layering of smooth guitars, sensible rhythms, and graceful melodies creates a unique, irresistible sound that’s been compared to The Strokes, The Wombats and Tokyo Police Club. Eager Eyes released their eponymous EP in November as well as an outstanding new single back in January, both of which are available for free download off their Bandcamp. http://www.facebook.com/eagereyesband

If you have time tomorrow night and live by the area, come out to support this super cool local event! All the proceeds go towards Free the Youth!! :)

Winter joys!

Posted by Carrie

I hope everyone had a holly jolly holiday! Here are some winter holiday service events that our batrays held:

On December 18th, our very own Alameda High made holiday cards for Macy’s Make-A-Wish foundation. They later went caroling for cans around Alameda’s Bayfarm Island! The event was very successful as they sang through the night.

In addition, St. Josephs, Oakland Tech and ASTI all came out that very Sunday to also make cards for Macy’s Make-A-Wish foundation at the Oakland Main Library! We continued working while we had our area meeting later that day.

During the winter break, Oakland Tech’s Interact club has also been volunteering numerous days for Satellite Housing, an organization throws Christmas feasts for seniors all over Oakland and Berkeley every year at the end of the year.

Clothing drive for Ugandan children

Posted by Carrie

Hey everyone!
It’s been AWFULLY CHILLY LATELY, hasn’t it?

Well, check this out! Oakland Technical high school is going to be doing a clothing drive for a group of orphans in Uganda! They will be collecting clothes for a group named Children of Uganda. About 20 orphaned Ugandan teenagers will be coming to the Bay Area at the beginning of January as part of a dance troop to raise awareness and money about their current situations and poverty in Uganda. They will be taking school donations until the end of January. The Area 1 schools will all be pitching in efforts to donate clothes to this cause!

Here are the Ugandan children that will be coming:
10 boys, 10 girls, ages 10 and up (mainly teenagers)

The most-needed items again are:
Jeans
Exercise pants
Tanks/undershirts
Belts
PJs
Long skirts for girls
Shoes (sneakers or good walking shoes) are second priority and harder to organize, but if you can donate those then that’s great. Remember that most of these kids are rather small, in terms of weight. we should have a variety of clothes but think on small size.

If you want more information, feel free to email area1@interact5170.org to get in contact with the Oakland Technical High School’s Interact Club!

Here are just some quick and fun videos of the children that will be coming: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8gy–hhqrw & http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGQqi3LSYVc

I hope to see lots of people help their cause! Other than that, stay warm everyone! :) !!!

Love,
Mama Bat ray Carrie
